A Major Milestone in India’s Unique Private-Private Partnership in Medical Education

Jamshedpur, June 1, 2026: Manipal Academy of Higher Education — an Institution of Eminence Deemed-to-be University — and its constituent institution Manipal Tata Medical College celebrated the college’s first-ever convocation ceremony today at its campus in Baridih, Jamshedpur. Organized as part of MAHE’s 33rd Convocation, the event marked a historic milestone in the institution’s journey.

The occasion was especially significant as the first pioneering batch of 133 MBBS students from the academic year 2020–2021 graduated successfully. During the ceremony, MAHE Vice Chancellor Dr. Sharat K. Rao formally conferred medical degrees upon the graduates, who are now prepared to contribute meaningfully to the healthcare ecosystem.
The dignified ceremony was attended by Santosh Gangwar as the Chief Guest. Distinguished Guest K. Vijay Kumar was also present. Other dignitaries included D. B. Sundar Ramam, Somnath Das, and MTMC Dean Brigadier Dr. H. S. Bandhu. Family members of graduates, senior leadership from MAHE and Tata Steel, faculty members, academicians, and invited guests also attended the event.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Santosh Gangwar described the convocation as not only a celebration of academic achievement but also of the graduates’ future contributions to society. Recalling the founders’ vision, he said:
“Education and healthcare are among the most powerful instruments of social transformation. Building a healthier and more equitable society requires a strong foundation.”
He reminded the graduating doctors that medicine is not merely a profession but a mission of service to humanity. He also emphasized that despite rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, and modern medical technologies, the foundation of healthcare still lies in empathy, trust, and human connection.

Joining virtually, Jharkhand Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Irfan Ansari stated:
“Our responsibility is not limited to providing treatment. We must stand for patients’ rights, earn their trust, and become a compassionate support system during times of crisis.”
Addressing the graduating students, K. Vijay Kumar urged young doctors to embrace the profession with passion, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to learning. He highlighted the importance of teamwork among doctors, nurses, paramedics, and support staff in delivering quality healthcare.
In his address, Dr. Sharat K. Rao said:“MTMC has emerged as a strong academic institution with a growing reputation for excellence in medical education, research, and innovation. We are confident that our first graduating batch is fully equipped with the competence, confidence, and ethical values required to excel in the ever-evolving field of medicine.”
He further added that MAHE remains committed to strengthening research and academic growth at MTMC to prepare healthcare professionals capable of contributing both nationally and globally.

Speaking on the occasion, Somnath Das remarked:
“The government’s policy vision for a private-private consortium in medical education has been successfully translated into reality at MTMC. The graduation of the first batch is a living testament to the strength and long-term value of this pioneering partnership.”
D. B. Sundar Ramam said
“Tata Steel has always believed in creating meaningful social impact, and MTMC reflects that commitment in a powerful way. The institution represents a long-term investment in education, healthcare, and community development for the region.”
The program began with a welcome address by Brigadier Dr. H. S. Bandhu, while the vote of thanks was delivered by MAHE Registrar Dr. Giridhar Kini.
